michaelkelly.org - Verse in The Lord of the Rings
« Back Home

What follows is a list of the first lines of all the songs/chants/other verse found in The Lord of the Rings. An aid for searching, perhaps, if you remember part of the first line. I am a bit more picky about what constitutes a separate "song" than the Appendix of LotR itself. For instance, I'm listing every single one of Tom Bombandil's songs separately (hence the list being so long for Book I). The page numbers are from the three-volume Del Rey/Ballantine U.S. edition. (The word "book" here refers to the actual books -- not volumes in which the books are published. LotR is six books, published for convenience in three volumes of two books each.) Page numbers are respective to volumes, not books. If I go really crazy on this I might put the whole text of each bit of verse, as well as some explanation of context. Maybe.
